Fair trade is an organized movement and market-based approach to alleviating global poverty and promoting sustainability. The movement promotes the payment of a fair price as well as social and environmental standards in areas related to the production of a wide variety of goods, in our case chocolate. Fair trade is focusing in particular on exporting goods (handicrafts, cocoa, coffee, tea, bananas, sugar, honey, cotton, wine, fresh fruit) from developing countries to our Western world.

The situation is even made worse by a very volatile cocoa market price. Fair Trade certification ensures dignity for cocoa farmers, so they receive a fair price for their harvest. It creates direct trade routes between farmers and buyers. Through Fair Trade, more than 42,000 cocoa farmers the Caribbean, West Africa, and South America are earning a decent price for their high quality crop. Fair Trade gives farmers the tools to access the market and farm sustainable. On Fair Trade farms, slave labor is strictly prohibited and inspected to ensure that Fair Trade standards are being met. The Fair Trade Certified label on your hot cocoa, chocolate bar or other product, is your guarantee that your purchase is directly benefiting local cocoa farmers and their families thousands of miles away instead of many middle men.
